President Wyse will discuss how to stay informed, and discern the data that needs to be shared with the campus. They will discuss how to inform and maintain a sense of calm with the students, campus constituents, and the board of trustees. Whether there is a pandemic, fire or other crisis, fear exists people can jump to conclusions. How to balance the overwhelming amount of data coming in and determining what, when and how to share it.

As the majority of organizations and institutions have shifted to a new norm, a distributed (remote) work environment, it is important to understand the dynamics that drive this new remote culture. This workshop will outline the cognitive triggers we encounter in our remote environment, share best practices of managing remote teams, and will provide a framework for increasing virtual engagement.

This session helps administrators to learn about what the various technologies used in different segments of the college. Our facilitators will walk you through how they can provide more personalized time with students so we can address the needs of the students who are most impacted by the existing practices which are usually institutional and impersonal. Through the proper use of the right technologies, colleges have an opportunity to create a welcoming and inclusive online student support environment that can easily serve all students.

Presenter Bios:
Bonnie Peteres is Chief Student Services Officer for the California Virtual Campus Online Education Initiative (CVC-OEI). Prior to 2014, Peters spent 15 years at San Diego City College, where she counseled and taught students both on campus and online. Throughout her career, she has provided leadership in a variety of student services. In 2005, she developed the college’s online counseling program, a first among community colleges, both regionally and nationally. She holds an MS in counseling and an MA in Teaching and Learning with Technology. Her current professional endeavors include encouraging colleges to intentionally provide support services as an integral part of distance education programs and identifying emerging technology platforms to design via one-stop online student support hubs.
Cynthia earned her BA in Psychology and a Master of Science in Counseling from California State University San Bernardino. She earned her Ph.D. in Education with an emphasis in Urban Leadership from Claremont Graduate University in 2008. Dr. Olivo is the granddaughter of migrant farmworkers, daughter of an amazing single mom, first in her family to go to college and third generation Chicana.
